The Great Southern Land series celebrates the timeless beauty of Australia through spectacular natural inlays. This 2021 release turns to the nation’s sparkling coastline with an Australia-shaped insert of iridescent mother of pearl — a lustrous material with deep ties to Australia’s south sea pearling heritage and the historic pearling town of Broome. Natural variations in the shell mean no two coins are exactly alike.

The reverse of the coin surrounds the mother of pearl centrepiece with creatures of the surrounding seas — a great white shark, sea turtle, seahorse, blue-ringed octopus, starfish and stingray. Designed by Aleysha Howarth, the design also includes The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, weight, purity and year-date.

The obverse of the coin bears the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, together with the $1 monetary denomination.

The coin comes housed in a classic display case with a clear lid, set within a beautifully illustrated shipper, and is accompanied by an individually numbered certificate of authenticity attesting to its maximum mintage of just 5,000.
