The lettering found on the obverse of all Australian predecimal denominations from 1937 to 1948 include the legend - GEORGIVS VI. D:G: BR: OMN: REX. FD. IND: IMP. This is stated in full Latin text as - Georgius VI: Dei Gratia: Brittanniarum Omnia Rex: Fidei Defensor: India Imperateur. Translated to English this means - George VI, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India.

Below the head of King George; in small lettering, artist Thomas Humphrey Paget's initials 'HP' can be faintly identified. The reverse of the coin features the distinguished kangaroo design. This design is found on the Australian penny from 1938 to 1964. Reverse artist George Kruger Gray's initials 'KG' can be seen above the tip of the kangaroo tail.

Minted in Melbourne this 1939 penny has a diameter of 30.8 millimetres and a weight of 9.248 grams.
